In-house hiring isn't always the right fit
If you don’t have a big budget and you hire in-house, you may end up with a junior fundraiser who needs training and a lot of hand holding, which you don’t have time to do. You may not have done a lot of fundraising as an Executive Director and you need an expert, not a Development Coordinator with limited (or no) experience. You also need fast results that a junior fundraiser can’t deliver.
Traditional consulting can miss the mark
Hiring a consultant is another option, but you’ve probably already tried that in the past. Maybe you received government funding for a fundraising plan. You hired a consultant who gave you a beautifully designed plan with lots of great ideas and advice that you don't have the resources to implement. The plan ends up saved on your drive without ever being opened again. Or you hired a consultant to do a smaller project, like a holiday appeal, that didn’t perform as you had hoped. The consultant probably left after the appeal was sent so there wasn’t even a chance to debrief or re-engage donors to prime them for the next campaign.
